Where the per-gram number comes from
Gold trades worldwide in troy ounces, and one troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams. The per-gram figure on this page is the live ounce price divided by that number. The ounce price is $4,141.50 now, so a gram works out to $133.15. Nothing else is added or subtracted.
Going the other way, one gram is 0.03215 of a troy ounce. If you know the ounce price and want a quick gram figure in your head, divide by 31 and you will be within about a quarter of one percent.
The figure refreshes in two ways. The page is rebuilt on a schedule with fresh data, and in your browser the number re-ticks every minute without a reload. If scripts are blocked, the last value written into the page stays visible and still carries its timestamp, which reads October 5, 2026 at the top of this page.
What a gram of gold looks like in the real world
A gram is small. A paper clip weighs about one gram. Here are typical weights for common items, given as rough ranges, because design changes everything. A hollow chain and a solid one of the same length can differ by a factor of three.
| Item | Typical weight |
|---|---|
| Thin plain wedding band | 2 to 4 g |
| Wide or heavy band | 6 to 10 g |
| Small stud earrings (pair) | 0.5 to 2 g |
| Delicate chain, 18 inch | 2 to 6 g |
| Medium curb or rope chain | 8 to 20 g |
| Class ring | 7 to 15 g |
| Charm bracelet | 10 to 30 g |
| Dental crown | about 1 to 3 g |
These weights include any stones and solder. Subtract the weight of stones if you know it, because gems do not count as gold. As a feel for scale, a 5 gram 24K piece carries $665.70 of melt value, and a 10 gram 14K item carries $776.72.
Gram, pennyweight and ounce: moving between units
Scrap buyers, jewelers and bullion dealers each have a favorite unit, and you will hear all three in the same afternoon.
- Gram. The metric unit, used on most modern scales and by European and Asian dealers.
- Pennyweight (dwt). A traditional jeweler's unit equal to 1.55517 grams, or one twentieth of a troy ounce. Today a pennyweight of pure gold is worth $207.07.
- Troy ounce. 31.1035 grams, the unit of the live price.
Quick conversions: grams divided by 1.555 gives pennyweights; grams divided by 31.1 gives troy ounces; pennyweights divided by 20 gives troy ounces. The value by weight chart lays every unit in one table.
A worked example with karat and rounding
Say you have a 12 gram 14K bracelet. The pure gold content is 12 × .583 = 7.0 grams. At today's price that gold is worth $932.07.
Now notice what happens if the scale is off. Rounding to the nearest gram on a kitchen scale is common, and it can be misleading. A single tenth of a gram of 24K gold is worth $13.30, so a scale that reads 12 grams when the true weight is 11.5 grams is overstating the value by the worth of half a gram of the alloy.
Scale accuracy and what to buy
Not all scales are created equal. A cheap kitchen scale usually reads to 1 gram, and it may be off by more than that at small weights. A jeweler's scale reads to 0.01 gram, and it is calibrated with test weights. For gold, aim for 0.01 gram resolution if you can find it.
Practical tips:
- Put the scale on a hard, level surface away from drafts and vibrations.
- Zero it with nothing on the pan, then add your piece.
- Weigh twice and use the lower number if they differ.
- Remove any stones, gold-filled parts or non-gold clasps first if you can, or deduct their weight.
- Write down the weight with the date, so you can compare it with a buyer's reading.
What this chart can't tell you
The per-gram figure is melt value for gold of the stated purity. It does not know whether your piece is truly 14K, whether it has hollow parts, or how much of the weight is a gemstone. It is also not the amount a buyer will pay. When people sell scrap, offers typically come in below melt; the trade reports local buyers and jewelers at roughly 60 to 85 percent, mail-in buyers at 70 to 90 percent, and refiners at 90 percent or more for large lots. If you are selling, read the melt value versus resale page before you accept an offer, and use the gold value calculator to work out what percentage of melt each offer represents.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a gram of gold worth today?
Pure 24K gold is $133.15 per gram at the live price. A gram of 14K is $77.67 and a gram of 18K is $99.86, because those alloys contain less gold.
How many grams are in a troy ounce?
There are 31.1034768 grams in a troy ounce, which is the unit gold is priced in. The ordinary kitchen ounce is lighter at 28.3495 grams, and mixing the two causes real errors.
How do I calculate the value of my gold in grams?
Weigh the item in grams, multiply by the purity (for example .583 for 14K), then multiply by the per-gram price. The table above does this for common weights.
Is the per-gram price the same everywhere?
The spot price is the same, but what you pay to buy or receive when you sell differs. Dealers add a premium on the way in and buyers subtract a margin on the way out.
What is a gram of 10K gold worth?
At the live price, it is $55.48. It is lower than the others because only 41.7 percent of the metal is gold.
Why does the number change while I am looking at the page?
The live price moves during trading hours, and this page re-ticks every minute. The timestamp at the top shows when the value was last written.
Does one gram of gold have any collector premium?
A small gold bar or coin might trade at a premium because of fabrication and dealer costs. The chart here shows the underlying gold only.
