Every row in the table is pure gold priced from the same live number. Only the unit changes. If your gold is not 24K, multiply the row by the purity share of your karat, or visit the gold value by karat page.

Why there are so many units

Gold has been weighed for thousands of years, and each trade picked its own measure. The result is that a refiner in Switzerland, a pawn counter in Texas and a jeweler in Mumbai may quote the same metal in three different units. None of them is wrong. You just need to know which one is in front of you before you compare prices.

The units, one at a time

The gram

The metric base unit and the one most digital scales use. It is the right choice for small jewelry. Pure gold is $133.15 per gram today.

The pennyweight

Abbreviated dwt, it equals 24 grains or 1.55517 grams, and 20 of them make a troy ounce. The name comes from the old English silver penny, which weighed one pennyweight. US scrap buyers and jewelers still quote in dwt, so you will see it on buying sheets. Pure gold is $207.07 per pennyweight now. For a karat piece, an 8 dwt 10K item holds $690.25 of gold, and a 12 dwt 14K item holds $1,449.52.

The troy ounce

At 31.1034768 grams, this is the unit gold is priced in worldwide. When someone says "the price of gold is $4,141.50," they mean per troy ounce. It has 480 grains, and 12 troy ounces make a troy pound.

The avoirdupois ounce

This is the ordinary ounce used on kitchen scales and postal scales, 28.3495 grams. It is about 9.7 percent lighter than a troy ounce. Gold is not priced by it, but it is the unit most home scales display.

The kilogram

1,000 grams, or 32.1507 troy ounces. Pure gold in a kilo is worth $133,152 today. Kilo bars are the standard in many Asian and Middle Eastern markets, and a standard 400 ounce bar of the kind held by central banks is about 12.44 kilograms.

The tola

A South Asian unit of about 11.66 grams. A single tola of 22K gold carries $1,423.64 at the live price. You will meet it in India, Pakistan, and the Gulf, and in family jewelry bought abroad.

The kitchen-scale trap

This is the mistake that costs people the most. Say you put a piece on a kitchen scale and it reads 2 ounces. Those are avoirdupois ounces, equal to 56.7 grams, which is only 1.82 troy ounces. If you treat the reading as 2 troy ounces and multiply by the gold price, you overstate the worth by $733.40.

The fix is simple. Use grams on the scale if it has a gram setting, since grams are the same everywhere. If the scale only gives ounces, multiply the reading by 28.35 to get grams, then continue with a gram figure. Never plug a kitchen ounce reading straight into a spot price.

When you are comparing offers, ask each one to state the price per gram of pure gold. That removes the unit and the karat from the comparison, and what is left is the percentage of melt value, which is the figure that decides who is giving you a better deal.

Converting between units

  • Grams to troy ounces: divide by 31.1035.
  • Troy ounces to grams: multiply by 31.1035.
  • Pennyweights to grams: multiply by 1.5552.
  • Avoirdupois ounces to grams: multiply by 28.3495.
  • Kilograms to troy ounces: multiply by 32.1507.

A small piece of arithmetic goes a long way. A 10 gram 24K item has a value of $1,331.39, and a 5 gram one has $665.70. For anything heavier, you can scale up from the table.

What this chart can't tell you

The values in the weight table are melt values for pure gold: weight times the live price. They show what the metal inside is worth, which is a ceiling for most sales, not the amount of an offer. A buyer who weighs your piece has to test it, refine it or resell it, and so pays less than melt. Reports from the trade put local jewelers and buyers at about 60 to 85 percent, mail-in buyers at 70 to 90 percent, and refiners with a minimum lot size at 90 percent and up. Dealer prices to buy run the other way, above the figures here. To see how the gap arises, read gold melt value versus resale, and to run your own piece through, try the gold value calculator.
