Frequently Asked Questions

Values on this page use gold spot at $4,141.50/oz · updated

Short answers to the questions people ask most about gold values, with links to the pages that go deeper. Gold is $4,141.50 per troy ounce as of October 5, 2026.

Reading the chart

What does a gold value chart show?

It shows the market value of the gold itself, in US dollars, over time. Value is weight times purity times the spot price. It does not show a dealer's selling price or a buyer's payout, both of which differ from the metal's worth. See how to read a gold value chart.

What is the spot price of gold?

Spot is the going price for immediate delivery of one troy ounce of pure gold, currently $4,141.50. Everything else on the site is derived from it: a gram of pure gold is $133.15, and a kilogram is $133,152. Spot moves nearly around the clock on weekdays.

Why does the chart use futures when the headline uses spot?

Spot gives the current number, but futures closes give a clean daily record to chart. They normally trade a little above spot because holding gold costs money. Right now the gap is +$26.10, about +0.6% of the price.

How often do the numbers update?

The site rebuilds automatically from fresh market data, and your browser re-ticks the headline figures each minute. The timestamp (October 5, 2026) shows when the last rebuild used the data. Public data feeds can lag the live market slightly, so confirm any trade with a live quote.

Where does the data come from?

The spot price comes from gold-api.com, and the chart history uses COMEX gold futures (GC=F) closes retrieved through Yahoo Finance. Our about page lists both, and the arithmetic that turns them into per-gram, per-karat and per-coin values.

Is the price here the same as the London gold price?

Not exactly. The LBMA Gold Price is set twice a day in London by an electronic auction. Spot, futures and the London price follow each other closely, and small gaps between them are normal. We use the sources named above for consistency.

Karat and weight

How much is a gram of gold worth?

Pure 24K gold is $133.02 per gram. A gram of 18K is $99.86, 14K is $77.67, and 10K is $55.48. Karat tells you the fraction that is actual gold. The gold value per gram page has a table from 1 to 100 grams.

What do the karat numbers mean?

Karat is the number of parts of gold out of 24. So 24K is pure, 18K is 75 percent gold, 14K is about 58.3 percent, and 10K is about 41.7 percent. The rest is other metals. Stamps such as 417, 585 and 750 give the same information as parts per thousand.

Why is 10K the lowest karat sold as gold in the US?

US rules say an item below 10K cannot be marked or sold as gold. Other countries set different thresholds, and 9K is recognized in the UK. If a piece is stamped lower than 10K in the US, it is not labeled as gold.

What is a pennyweight?

A pennyweight, written dwt, is one-twentieth of a troy ounce, or about 1.555 grams. Jewelers and scrap buyers use it widely in the US. At today's spot, pure gold is $207.07 per pennyweight. See gold value by weight for all the common units.

What is the difference between a troy ounce and a regular ounce?

A troy ounce is about 31.1035 grams, and a standard (avoirdupois) ounce is about 28.3495 grams, so the troy ounce is about 9.7 percent heavier. Gold is always quoted in troy ounces. Weighing it on a kitchen scale in ounces is a common mistake.

How do I work out what my jewelry is worth?

Weigh it in grams, check the karat stamp, and multiply the weight by the per-gram value for that karat. For example, 10 grams of pure gold would be $1,331.39. The gold value calculator does this for you and accepts pennyweights and ounces too.

Coins and bars

How much is a gold coin worth?

The metal in a one-ounce American Gold Eagle is worth $4,141.50 at spot. That is its melt value. A buyer or dealer will usually price the coin above that because of premium for minting and demand. The gold coin value chart lists the major coins.

Why does a one-ounce Eagle weigh more than an ounce?

Eagles are 22K, with copper and silver added for durability. The coin weighs 33.931 grams gross, and exactly one troy ounce of that is gold. Buffalos and Maple Leafs are nearly pure at .9999, so they weigh about one troy ounce on the scale.

How much is a gold bar worth?

In metal alone, a 1-ounce bar is $4,141.50, a 10-ounce bar is $41,415, and a kilogram bar is $133,139. A full 400-ounce bar, the size central banks hold, is $1,656,600. The gold bar value chart covers 1 gram to 400 ounces.

Why do bigger bars cost less per ounce above spot?

Fabricating, assaying and shipping a bar carries a fixed cost no matter how much gold it holds. Spread across more ounces, that cost becomes a smaller share of the price. As a pattern, the premium per ounce falls as bar size rises.

How can I tell a real bar from a fake?

Check the weight and dimensions against the product's published specs, compare the serial number with its assay card, and buy from a seller you can verify. Tungsten matches gold's density, so some fakes pass a weight test. Be cautious about unusual sources.

Buying gold

What is the premium over spot?

It is the amount a dealer charges above the gold's melt value, covering minting, assay, shipping, insurance and profit. It varies by product and dealer. As an illustration, a 4 percent premium on a one-ounce coin means paying $4,307.16 when spot is $4,141.50. Read where to buy gold.

Where should I buy gold?

For one coin or a few small bars, a reputable local coin shop or a large online dealer is the practical choice. For a purchase of $50,000 or more, cash or IRA, we recommend Augusta Precious Metals. Before paying anyone, get the total cost in writing.

Is Augusta right for me?

If you are buying one coin, no. Augusta requires a $50,000 minimum, whether you buy with cash or for an IRA. For larger purchases it offers one-on-one education and a price locked on a recorded call. It was founded in 2012 and is A+ rated by the BBB.

Are there complaints about Augusta?

As of September 2026, the BBB lists one complaint in the last three years, and the company answered it. We do not say anything beyond that, and we suggest reading the BBB profile yourself, as with any company you consider paying.

Can I put gold in an IRA?

Yes, in a self-directed IRA, but approved gold must be held by an approved depository rather than kept at home. Eagles are eligible, Buffalos and Maple Leafs qualify at .995 purity or better, and Krugerrands are not. A tax professional can explain how it applies to you.

What should I ask a dealer before buying?

Ask for the total cost in writing, the premium over melt for the exact product, whether it is bullion or a collector coin, what the buyback would be, and the cancellation terms. Be cautious about cold calls. The full list is in where to buy gold.

Selling gold

Why is my offer lower than the chart value?

The chart shows melt value, the worth of the metal. Buyers need room to cover refining or resale and profit. Typical payouts reported by the trade run from about 90 to 98 percent of melt at refiners, which often set minimum lots, down to 60 to 85 percent at local buyers.

How do I compare offers fairly?

Convert each offer to a percentage of melt value. For instance, 12 pennyweights of 14K has a melt value of $1,449.52, so an offer of $1,159.62 is 80 percent. Get several offers on the same day. See melt value versus what buyers pay.
