THE BASICS
What a gold value chart shows
Gold price per troy ounce, past year
Data sources: Spot price via api.gold-api.com · COMEX futures (GC=F) via Yahoo Finance. Prices are for informational purposes only and may be delayed. Figures on this page were generated . Gold is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce.
A gold value chart answers a narrower question than most people expect. It does not tell you what a dealer will pay for the ring in your drawer or charge for the coin you want. It shows the market value of the metal itself, and every other number on this site is built from that base with simple arithmetic: weight, times purity, times the spot price.
Weight is what your scale reads, converted into troy ounces, the unit the gold market quotes in. Purity is the fraction of the item that is actually gold, from about 42 percent in 10K jewelry to 99.99 percent in a modern bullion bar. Spot is the live price for one troy ounce of pure gold, currently $4,141.50. Multiply the three together and you have the item's melt value, the worth of the gold content if it were refined tomorrow.
What spot is, and what the chart plots. The big number at the top of the page is a spot price, the going rate for immediate delivery of gold. The line on the chart is built from COMEX gold futures closes, the contract that traders use to price gold for later delivery. The two are close but not identical. Right now futures sit +$26.10 from spot, about +0.6% of the price. Futures normally trade a little above spot because holding gold until delivery date costs money in financing and storage, so a small gap is expected and not a sign of an error. If you want the full explanation of timeframes, line versus candle charts and axis scales, how to read a gold value chart walks through each one.
How fresh the figures are. The page is rebuilt automatically from fresh market data, and the numbers you see are re-ticked in your browser each minute. If your browser blocks scripts, you still get the last rebuilt values, with the timestamp shown (October 5, 2026).
BY KARAT
Reading gold value by karat
Karat is the first thing to settle for jewelry, because it decides how much of the piece is gold. Pure 24K gold is $133.02 per gram today. Drop to 18K, which is 75 percent gold, and a gram is worth $99.86. A gram of 14K, the most common karat in American jewelry, comes to $77.67, and a gram of 10K, the lowest karat that can legally be sold as gold in the US, is worth $55.48. The rest of the alloy is copper, silver, zinc or similar metals that add strength and color but carry almost no value.
Two pieces that weigh the same can therefore be worth very different amounts. A 10-gram chain stamped 14K holds far more gold than a 10-gram chain stamped 10K, and the stamp is the quickest way to tell. Look for 417, 585, 750, 916 or 999, or the karat number itself, usually near the clasp. The full table, with per-ounce and per-pennyweight columns and what each karat is used for, is on the gold value by karat page.
COINS
Gold coin value
Coins get their own table because their melt value is not what you would guess from the face. An American Gold Eagle weighs 33.931 grams gross but holds exactly one troy ounce of gold, because it is 22K, with the rest copper and silver. A Krugerrand has the same gold content and the same 22K alloy, and Canadian Maple Leafs and American Buffalos are nearly pure gold at .9999. One ounce of fine gold in a coin is worth $4,141.50 at spot, and fractional Eagles scale down from there.
Melt value is a floor for most coins, because buyers pay a premium over it for minting costs, scarcity and collector demand. It is a ceiling for what a seller can expect, since a buyer needs room to resell. The gold coin value chart lists each major coin with its gross weight, fineness, fine gold and melt value, and explains how those two figures drift apart.
BARS
Gold bar value
Bars run from a single gram to the 400-ounce bars that central banks and refiners move between vaults. A 1-ounce bar is worth $4,141.50 in gold content, a 10-ounce bar $41,415, a kilogram bar $133,139, and a full 400-ounce bar $1,656,600. Those are melt values only. What you pay at a dealer is higher, and the extra shrinks, in proportion, as the bar gets larger, because fabrication and handling costs are spread over more gold.
Beyond size, bars differ in how they are made. Cast bars are poured into a mold and are usually plainer; minted bars are struck from blanks and often arrive sealed in an assay card with a serial number. The gold bar value chart covers sizes from 1 gram to 400 ounces, how to read a bar's fine weight, and why a tungsten-filled fake can still fool a casual look.

MELT VS RESALE
Why the chart and your offer differ
If you take a gold necklace to a buyer, the offer will be lower than the number on this page. That is normal, and it is not a trick. A buyer has to cover the cost of refining or reselling, carry the risk of the gold price moving before the sale closes, and make a profit. Typical payouts reported by the trade run from roughly 90 to 98 percent of melt at a refiner, who often sets a minimum lot, down to 70 to 90 percent for mail-in buyers and 60 to 85 percent for local buyers and jewelers. Pawn shops are often well under that. These are ranges reported by the trade, not quotes, and your offer can fall outside them.
The useful move is to compute melt value yourself first, then compare every offer as a percentage of it. A 14K item weighing 12 pennyweights has a melt value of $1,449.52; an offer at 80 percent of that would be $1,159.62. Having that number in hand makes it much easier to spot a lowball. The page on gold melt value versus what buyers pay goes through how to get comparable offers, scrap versus coins versus bars, and what to do before you sell.
BUYING
Where buying gold fits
Most visitors come here to check a price, and many leave with nothing more in mind. Some are working up to a purchase. If that is you, the main thing to understand is the gap between spot and what you pay, which is called the premium. As an illustration only, a coin carrying a 4 percent premium would cost $4,307.16 when spot is $4,141.50, while a buyer paying out the same day might offer $4,058.67. That spread, $248.49, is the cost of getting in and out, and it is why gold suits people who plan to hold it for a long time rather than trade it.
We recommend one company, Augusta Precious Metals, and we are specific about who it suits. It is a fit for a larger purchase, with a $50,000 minimum that applies to cash and IRA buyers alike. If you want one coin, a local coin shop or a mainstream online dealer is the better route, and our where to buy gold guide covers both, along with questions to put to any dealer before you pay.
QUESTIONS
Gold value chart FAQ
What is gold worth per ounce right now?
The live figure is $4,141.50 per troy ounce, shown at the top of the page and refreshed from market data automatically, then re-ticked each minute in your browser. Troy ounces are slightly heavier than the ounces on a kitchen scale, so make sure you are comparing like with like.
What is gold worth per gram?
Pure 24K gold is $133.02 per gram, and the raw spot figure per gram is $133.15. The difference comes from the .999 purity used for 24K. Lower karats are worth proportionally less, so a gram of 14K is $77.67. The per-gram chart shows weights up to 100 grams.
Why is the chart price different from what a dealer quotes?
The chart shows the metal alone. Dealers add a premium when you buy, covering minting, assay, insurance and profit, and they pay less than spot when you sell so they can resell at a margin. The size of that gap varies with the product, the dealer and the day.
Is this the same price banks and traders use?
It is close. Our headline figure is a spot quote from gold-api.com, and the chart uses COMEX futures closes from Yahoo Finance. The London benchmark, the LBMA Gold Price, is set separately twice a day in an electronic auction. All three track each other closely and can differ by a small amount at any moment.
How much is my gold jewelry worth?
Weigh it, find the karat stamp, and multiply by the matching value. A 5-gram piece of pure gold would be $665.70. For a quick answer without arithmetic, the gold value calculator takes a karat and a weight in grams, pennyweights or ounces. Remember that this is melt value, not an offer.
Does this site give financial or tax advice?
No. We publish gold values and explain how they are calculated. If you are deciding whether to buy, sell or hold, or how a sale will be taxed, a licensed professional can look at your situation in a way we cannot.
